Mona Lisa (Pink) is one of many different Mona Lisa versions by Banksy. One of the better known is the smiley-faced Mona Lisa from the Crude Oils series which found its way into the Louvre un-detected. The artist entered several renowned museums disguised as a security guard and smuggled various pieces into the exhibitions. Mona Lisa combines all the wit and power one would expect from Banksy’s work but also raises some troubling questions about the nature of the art world. By using spray paint and stencils to reinterpret one of the most technically proficient images in the history of Western art, the artist explores issues of hierarchy and hegemony in the way art is viewed and exhibited.
