A video posted by Banksy on Instagram shows a homeless man named “Ryan” describing his life in a few minutes. The work consists of two reindeer, spray-painted on a wall and rising into the air. Instead of a sleigh, as befits the Christmas season, the animals appear to be tethered to a park bench; a look very reminiscent of the traditional image of Father Christmas. The film was set to the song “I’ll be home for Christmas” by Bing Crosby. The work was released just days before the British general election on 12th December and highlights the fact that homelessness in the United Kingdom had reached a record high. In Birmingham, at that time, one in 73 people were rough sleeping, and according to a report by the charity Shelter, 320,000 people across the UK were homeless, including 135,000 children.
