Banksy’s use of the monkey as Queen of England is either an extension of his monkeys rising to ever higher ranks of power in human society or a mocking look at the British monarchy. The artwork was first shown at the Chilled Out Zone, a club in central London. Banksy swapped the iconic portrait of the Queen of England with the face of a monkey and chose a target in the colours of the British flag for the background. The painting hung on a wall of the club for several months before it was finally hung on the window pane. It caught the eye of several supporters of the monarchy who felt the image of the Queen disrespectful to both the Queen and the flag. The Club was asked not to display the image during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. “The highest position in British society is not a reward for talent or hard work, but is given simply by birthright… God save the Queen.” – Banksy
